The story behind the hotel
The history of the place is inextricably linked to the Limfjord and not least the traffic on it. There has been ferry traffic at the place as far back as there is written material.
It is known – due to complaints in the mid-17th century from the nobility on Thy to Mors – that there was no house at Salling in the period mentioned, as the nobility wrote that when they returned home from meetings in Viborg and reached Sallingsund and the weather was bad, it was three-quarters of a mile to the nearest house where they could seek shelter. And since the weather could be the cause of several days’ stay due to lack of ferry service, there is probably no doubt why the ferry berths were called “Pinen” and “Plagen”.
In the late 1660s, a nobleman persuaded a local to build a shelter – “Vagthuset”. The location was first mentioned as far back as 1693. It became a crossing point for traffic from Salling to Mors. At first, rowing ferries were used, but later more modern ferries were added, and the famous Limfjord ferries “Pinen” and “Plagen” sailed the 1,700-meter-long route until May 30, 1978, when the Sallingsund Bridge was inaugurated. This was the end of a legendary ferry crossing that had existed since the Middle Ages.
At the old ferry landing, Pinenhus, which once belonged to the ferry company, has helped to erect a memorial to the beloved ferries. It is stonemason and sculptor Steen Jensen who, in designing the monument, has once again managed to push the boundaries between the possible and the impossible.
The old staging posts, which in the days of the ferry were also a natural gathering point for Sunday outings, now form the framework for a green area in connection with the large nature trail system at Pinenhus.
With that came another downturn for the inn and alternatives had to be considered.
In 1940, the dairy union bought the site, which they owned until 1984, when they merged with the NNF. They mainly used the site as a training venue, but of course there was also a restaurant and general hotel operation, as it is known today.
A modest restaurant and seven outdated rooms were the starting point, but under Finn Sørensen’s leadership things happened. He stipulated from the start that the place should be developed and the trade union NNF, which owned the center, was on board with the idea.
The following year, a rebuilt inn with 30 new rooms, two new halls and group rooms was put into use. The 1,500 m2 expansion was the start of a long series of improvements to the place, which are still ongoing. In 1989, the name was changed from Pinen Kro to Pinenhus.
Pinenhus is currently owned by Peder Mikkelsen and Kent Bak. Kent Bak is responsible for the daily operation of the hotel together with his wife Annamarie.
